Secondary fuel filter install on Land Rover Defender 2.4l TD Puma 2010 Model
With all the potential risk out there of receiving a tank load of poor quality diesel, particularly from a remote service station, I started to research how best I could protect my truck, hopefully avoiding a very expensive repair bill. And whilst I’ve mentioned remote service stations, it should also be noted that fuel qualities in major cities and regional areas have also been getting some bad raps recently. Choice magazine has been writing about contaminated fuel issues highlighting that repairs can cost around the $20,000 mark! If an incident occurred in a remote part of Australia costs would be exponentially higher.
What I found was there are two types of extra diesel filters you can easily install yourself to add some protection beyond your standard factory fuel filter. There is a ‘Primary’ filter, which filters fuel prior to going through your factory filter, or a ‘Secondary’ filter, which filters post the factory filter. The Primary filter type is generally a 30-micron filter, which means it is relatively large in filtration terms, but it will separate larger dirt particles and water, prior to your factory filter having to do the finer work. In a reverse manner, the ‘Secondary’ filter is often a finer grade filter of around 2 microns and there are benefits to either system. The Primary will take out any heavy work so your factory filter can concentrate on finer grades without being clogged. The Secondary filter gives you piece of mind knowing anything that passes your factory filter should be caught in the Secondary filter before damaging anything major in the engine. Good to know if you get an alert on your dashboard. Regardless either system will give you ‘peace of mind’ when driving on your next adventure in this great land.
On the market at the moment there appears to be a number of DIY kits covering the majority of 4wds. Companies such as Diesel Care and Flashlube are two such kit suppliers. My experience was installing a DIY kit from Diesel Care Australia on the Landy, and it was a Secondary filter, which is the only DIY kit for the Landy I could find. The reason for this is the Defender’s factory fuel filter is fitted right up next to the fuel tank, and it would be difficult to fit the primary type prior to this.
Well, let’s start with what is included in the kit. The kit comes with everything you need to get the job done, apart from tools obviously. It came with mounting brackets, fuel line, filter, all the connections, clamps, thread lock, bolts and screws required. The instructions were easy to follow and decent colour photos
were provided (always handy if you are trying to find something in an engine bay or under a car and you are not quite sure what they’re on about). In the case of the Landy the secondary fuel filter needs to be mounted from underneath behind the fuel cooler on the passenger chassis rail. The Land Rover Defender Puma models for whatever reason, do not have a manual pump or bleeder pump, unlike earlier TD5 models which by all accounts could be primed by pumping the accelerator pedal a number of times. Nor do they have an electronic bleeding option, which is kind of stupid in my book. Diesel Care fix this factory issue by including a manual priming pump on top of the secondary filter housing.
While the location of the install is not as easy as working in an engine bay, the job itself took me about 2hrs, and I wouldn’t call myself
particularly skilled in vehicle mechanics. The installation of the brackets and fuel lines were no issue. The most difficult part was unclamping the factory fuel supply line connection which has a small blue
plastic clip which has to be depressed for the connection to be released. This was just a little inconvenient to get to as it is located next to the chassis and above a cross member. All up, I only lost less than half a cup of diesel during the entire process and it is simply a matter of plugging the supply line straight into your new fuel hose.
I won’t go into the specific instructions as they are provided with the product, but I have added a few photos for interest if you happen to have a similar model and want an idea of the job. What I can say is I was very impressed with Diesel Care’s package and customer service from my initial contact on the phone to the overall contents contained in the package. It arrived with everything, solved a manual priming/bleeding issue or lack of one, and importantly came with quality underbody protection for the kit.

Hi Andrew, Hi Gavin
Not too sure where to start but please know, all your help has been greatly and truly appreciated, it really has, I can’t say that enough.
It was really good to meet Herbert Steinbauer and Hubert and if you will please pass on our appreciation to them both , I will be most grateful.
I would have liked to have met Natasha as she was my first contact with Diesel Care and was truly good to deal with.
Here is some Feedback on the Steinbauer Chip:
We returned to Montville via Hampton, Esk so there were a few long straights but predominantly hills and corners.
The Forester with the chip is a very different vehicle to drive now.
Firstly, the Forester is far more responsive either with a light throttle application or with a foot down acceleration.
I feel it is has smoother acceleration from stationary to say 110kph. (could not try it at any higher speed due to the position of oncoming traffic) but where we did notice the difference was that it was able to accelerate in a higher gear than it did without the chip.
Secondly, having participated in many car club rallies in the 70’s and 80’s I admit to being disappointed with the Forester’s 108 kW and its ability to have some power reserves to pull out of corners, it really did not have it, we would have been better off with an XT petrol turbo.
Having said that it is actually amazing the difference the Chip has made to the drivability of our Diesel Forester now. It punched out of any corner I had lined up for..in essence it is a completely different vehicle. I feel it is now a far better Driver’s Car.
I am happy to keep you posted with feedback in the coming weeks with different driving situations.
Overall I venture to say that if anyone drove off after you fitted a chip and said to you that they were disappointed then they would be most hard to please.

We have just returned from a 4 week trip to the Simpson Desert, doing the big run around it. The Landcruiser performed exceptionally well, many thanks to you and your team who checked the pump, then tuned the Steinbauer chip which was fitted by an inexperienced team at Tamworth. After you chaps tuned the vehicle it is a completely different truck to drive. The economy was a bit disappointing but was O.K., FUEL 876.6 ltrs and 6185 kms. Thank you for a great job.

Just a bit of an update on the Steinbauer. Very impressed with the difference to the Prado. The biggest change is to fuel consumption around town. With the Steinbauer and 3” Exhaust I am now getting 11.3LPH. Before fitting these I was only getting 13.3LPH. I am better off by 2 litre’s per hundred k’s. This has been consistent over the last few tank fills.
Haven’t been out of town with the vehicle yet since fitting the steinbauer but am off to Kununurra mid May and El Questro towing a camper trailer so will be interested to see how it goes. Last trip towing the Camper Trailer sitting on 100KPH I got 17LPH which was pre Steinbauer and exhaust. Will be interested to see the difference.

Great car, Great Chip. Thanks guys for your advice and assistance with my second Steinbauer!Read full testimonial
Dear Jamie and Andrew,
Back in September 2011, I wrote to you singing the praises of the Steinbauer performance chip Dieselcare Toowoomba fitted to my 2008 Landcruiser 200. At the time I had about eighteen months use with the chip and I continued to enjoy the added performance whether just for regular driving and most usefully when towing our off-road van.
I purchased a new Landcruiser last November and I phoned Andrew to check if the SB chip would be suitable for the newer model. And if so, then have it transferred to the new car. While I was assured it would be fine and advising you that I would get it swapped over, we subsequently decided to retain my old Landcruiser for another manager. After driving my old car for a couple weeks, he put pressure on me to leave the chip in his LC!!! I thought we might not keep the car long and could swap the chip before we moved it on, but as the vehicle had many off-road accessories installed and was still fairly low mileage we decided to keep it for use as a touring vehicle when we do trips with the 4WD magazines and customers.
So, with that in mind, I was left without a chip in my new Land Cruiser!
A few months passed and since most of my driving this year was up and down the M1 between work and home, I really thought I couldn’t see I’d get a lot of benefit when just cruising on the speed limit. But as my vacation time drew closer and the fact I intend to keep this baby for a bit longer than the last one, I could resist no longer and contacted Andrew to arrange to have new Steinbauer fitted to the new car (well not so new at 10 months when I got it fitted).
In my previous letter, I mentioned that I had done a fair amount of research on performance chips before selecting the Steinbauer. As happy as I was, things can change in 3 years so I again checked out the options before settling on a new SB. But the reality remained the same, only Steinbauer consists of the programmed timed delivery of fuel using the throttle sensor which means that unless you are seeking extra power from the accelerator, the fuel system remains standard. I can’t help but feel that this is a safer and more reliable system than simply increasing fuel pressure in the rail or some other trickery that in my mind could lead to a dispute with Toyota if something failed in the fuel system or worse. Plus the ability to shut off the SB system with a simple battery remote means I decide entirely when it runs. Although I generally leave it active 99% of the time like you said I would!
So, now I have my new Steinbauer in my new(ish) Landcruiser and I just wanted to tell you guys that I’m just as rapt in the performance gain as the last time. Got to say it might be new car psychology at work but I think even better. Certainly the new car is giving me better economy than the old car but that seems to be the car because the newer Landcruiser was better than the old one with and without the chip. Got to say that any 3 ton 4WD that gets a kick in the throttle like I and the Steinbauer give it and ability to cruise at highway speeds and deal with the stop start traffic of the M1 in peak hours and averages under 12l/100km is first class in my book.
Great car, Great Chip. Thanks guys for your advice and assistance with my second Steinbauer!

Had a Steinbauer Module fitted at Diesel Care Toowoomba I was very pleased with the service and overall result of the system installed, the increased power was evident on several occasions.Read full testimonial
In July 2012 my wife and I set out on a touring holiday around Australia, not just any holiday one that would see us do as much off the black top as possible. After leaving home in Hervey Bay we headed south to Jimboomba to our daughters place as we had arranged for a Beaudesert Exhaust system to be fitted along with a Steinbauer Module to be fitted at Diesel Care Toowoomba the following day to our 100 Series IFS 4.2TD Landcruiser.
I must admit I was skeptical about the claims made about increased fuel economy and performance by both companies, but I had done my research and considered the two systems I had chosen to have installed were in my opinion the most likely to provide results that I would be satisfied with.
We tow a KEDRON Top Ender which when set up for our trip weighed in at just under 3500 kg. Nearly all the dirt driving had tire pressures on both the car and van between 16 and 25 psi which doesn’t help the fuel economy either.
In order to compare the new with the old we used the records from our 2011 trip which covered Darwin and part of the Savannah Way including areas like the Reynolds River Track and Kingfisher Camp. On this trip we covered 9,715 km, consumed 2,248.4 litres of fuel and averaged 23.14 l / 100 km. I had carried out suspension upgrades but the engine and exhaust were standard on this trip.
After leaving Toowoomba we headed to Birdsville than took the most direct route to Karumba, which included going through Duchess and Lake Julius. We than headed up the Savannah Way to Lorella Springs where after I fixed the turbo which had vibrated loose, we did all the available 4WD tracks with the exception of Rosies Creek fishing camp before heading to Darwin. From Darwin it was off to Wyndham where we did the first part of the trip that Graham Cahill did down around the King River than off to the the Gibb River Road, calling into El Questro where we met up with the C&M magazine crew did all the available 4WD tracks and headed for Home Valley Station to do some more exploring including the Salmon River track. Our time on the GRR was shorter than we would have liked due to a cracked refrigeration gas line but that happens. Our next test for the new systems was heading up the Cape Leveque road to Middle Lagoon, after you turn off the main road it was 33 km of sand track in which required all the power available at times pulling the van through.
The next area requiring consideration with the van was getting into Red Bluff which is located some 70 km north of Quobba blowholes on Quobba Station. We than headed south to Hamelin Pools where we left the van and headed for Steep Point and it is as challenging in areas as they say, especially when travelling by ourselves. After leaving here the trip was some what mild until we headed into the North Gawler Ranges and up to Lake Gairdner in SA. We finished up by doing the Darling River run from Wilcannia to Bourke.
On this trip we covered 25,025 km, consumed 4,937.94 litres of fuel and averaged 19.73 l / 100 km at an average cost of $1.66 / litre for the trip.
You can see some of the areas we covered on our blog, but I haven’t quite finished it yet only up to Steep Point at the moment.
In closing I would like to say that I was very pleased with the service at both facilities and overall result of the systems installed, the increased power was evident on several occasions and I am under no illusions that it was the difference between a pleasant days drive and one you don’t want to remember on more than one occasion.
Since a STEINBAUER Module was fitted to my 2006 Hyundai Terracan the engine was responsive from day one.Read full testimonial
We have communicated before, but not since a Steinbauer was fitted to my 2006 Hyundai Terracan 2.9 CRDi, Automatic, on 14.3.12 by Shepparton 4 Wheel Drive Centre. I live in Kialla.
The engine was responsive from day one. Normal running around Shepparton, without any long trips between fills, I average around 9.0 l/100 km. With long trips mixed in I use around 8.5 l/100 km.
I have recently returned from towing my van to Yeppoon, return trip 3700 km. up the Newell and Leichhardt Highways. The van weighs 2.36 tonne, excluding tow ball (200kg). These are actual weighbridge weights. I tow on the flat around 95 km/hr by the GPS, which best suits the rev./torque range. Obviously, climbing hills slows the speed, although I do exceed 95 downhill if the road surface is OK and the going is clear. I tow in Overdrive all the time and never fiddle with the gears. I let the Auto make up its own mind.
I have found that the Steinbauer allows the Auto to stay in Overdrive longer on an incline, and allows it to change up quicker than before.
Overall towing I averaged 16.3 l/100km, which I am quite satisfied with. I averaged the same with my previous van which was 200kg lighter, and shorter.
People in the various caravan parks who towed similar loads with different vehicles were impressed with the fuel economy of the Terracan. Most were not able to match it. Those who did tow at much slower speeds. Naturally, wind is a huge factor.

Just a follow up on this module i got off you about a month ago, for my 2012 hilux, very happy with the results, I tried a DP chip before that and was very disappointed with it, lots of injector rattle, black smoke and very little power gain. This chip has given it some badly needed low down torque and better acceleration, and fuel economy seems no worse, maybe slightly better, went to Straddie the other weekend and did 740kms before the low fuel light came on, that was mostly highway, probably 150kms around town and about ½hr low range in soft sand. (8.72L/100km)

Hi Gavin, this email is just some feedback for the power pedal for my Landcruiser 200 which I purchased from you recently at the Camping/Caravan show at Rosehill. After fitting I did find some minimal pedal responsivness, but there is still a delay under quick acceleration. I also checked some data using my scantool and found before and after accelerator pedal sensor voltages vary slightly. I am happy with difference it has made and will contact you in the future regarding ECU unit upgrade for my vehicle.
Your team at Diesel Care Toowoomba fitted the Steinbauer Power Module to my 200 series Landcruiser, it has provided some serious extra performance! More power is instantly on tap if and when you need it.Read full testimonial
Dear Jamie and Andrew,
It’s about 15 months now since your team at Diesel Care Toowoomba fitted my Steinbauer tuning module to my Toyota 200 series Landcruiser. To cut to the chase, I am rapt with the improved performance it has given me, across all uses.
The Steinbauer Power Module provides some serious extra performance. Apart from the general improved responsiveness in around town and highway usage, I am delighted with the better towing experience now. The 200 is no slouch in standard trim, but there were times I thought it lacked the zing it should have been capable of, especially when compared to the petrol models.
I did a fair bit of research before I contacted your company and while there are cheaper alternatives out there, the way the Steinbauer Power Module works seems a whole lot more researched and not just a quick-trick solution. Basically it makes sense that unless the throttle sensor detects you are looking for more power, it behaves just like a standard 200. But more power is instantly on tap if and when you need it.
I’m not the rev-head I was when younger, but I still like performance. That’s the reason it took a vehicle like the 200 to get me into a diesel in the first place and more recently to look at performance modules. Since fitting the Steinbauer, there have been occasions when I’ve used the available power just for the fun of it and there have been a few drivers of other cars more than a little surprised at the Landcruiser’s ability to accelerate. No need to exceed the speed limits; the satisfaction is achieved by the time we reach them… Very happy!
Away from work, I regularly tow a 2.7t off road van and this is when the improvement is most noticeable. Since fitting the Steinbauer Power module, most of the time you barely notice the van’s there. With about 20% more power and 15% more torque, hills have far less impact on holding speed and it seems to reduce the transmission down shifting too. On a recent trip down the northern rivers of NSW, we were just cruising through the hilly bits, but my friend with a similar sized van told me he had trouble trying to hold on to us.
The best part is that as the 200 has run in, it’s just got even better and more tractable. It’s such a pleasure to drive. Around town and stop start, I’m getting around 13.5 l/100km, more when I use the loud pedal too much, bear in mind I mostly use off-road tyres and with my fitted accessories, my 200 weighs nearly 3,300kg all the time! It’s towing where there’s been a big improvement. Whereas before you fitted my module, I used to get around 18-19 l/100km and worse in hilly country, I now see 16-17 l/100km most of the time, regardless of terrain. And that is towing at or near the speed limits. The worst I’ve got though is only 21 but that was when there was a range climb and driving into a headwind all day. Both my previous tow vehicles could not get better than 25-28 l/100km towing the same van. They were petrol though. But none would come near my Steinbauer powered 200 for sheer comfortable towing and cruising.
Because I also sell premium products that have cheaper competition, I understand that not everyone sees the value in spending a little extra to get a result. But as we get many letters and emails from satisfied customers I thought I should let you know how pleased I am with my Steinbauer module. Fitting a chip is not just about price and fuel economy. It’s about much more than that and given the cost of vehicles, especially ones like the 200 Series, it’s important that owners consider longevity, reliability, function and the whole package.

To the manager,
Thank-you for one of the best purchase experiences I have had for a long time!
Last week I rang your general number and asked for advice on fuel filtration for my new BT50. Friendly, respectful, very helpful and honest response! I ordered a kit at that time to be picked up.
Yesterday I picked the kit up at the Toowoomba branch and the service was even better! After getting comprehensive answers to all my questions and lots more, I left having a much better understanding of the system and confident the install would be straight forward enough.
This morning I installed the filter kit and the service again was excellent! Not any issues with the detailed instructions and the install went perfectly.
Once again thank-you for the service and congratulations on leading such a great team.

Big tick for customer service!
I recently sent info in regard to missing parts, the fact that someone actually followed up with a phone call was sufficient enough, as I stated I was not seeking any recompense just advising in order that you may improve your systems. Working in a similar warehousing and distribution business I am very aware of the value of customer feedback both positive and negative to gauge where you are at.
I was pleasantly surprised to receive a filter in the mail today, was not necessary as I stated was not seeking any compensation, I would like to also state that I was very impressed with your level of knowledge of my particular vehicle, imparted in our phone conversation.
In this instance I would diffidently say you have under committed and over delivered and I would have no hesitation in recommending your company.
