Australian Camper Trailers FAQs
Why does Australian made matter for the canvas on the trailer?
While camper trailers at face value look very similar they can be vastly different in quality. Australian made canvas will generally of the highest possible quality and have inbuilt mould retardant in the manufacturing process to suit Australian conditions.
To save on costs many non-guild members use cheaper overseas manufactured canvas that looks fine, until it rains.
This recent CSIRO analysis of imported 14 ounce “ripstop” canvas shows the difference:
See the report here
The canvas leaks water when it rains, when you pack up and drive home mildew will form on it, making it necessary to replace the canvas in some instances:
Ripstop Fabric problems
How do I identify if its Aussie canvas on the Camper trailer?
Aussie made canvas will have a “Care” label on it that identifies the manufacturer of the canvas.
If you can’t locate it on the canvas tent or the care label does not identify the canvas as Australian Made it almost certainly is not.
What is the most important component in a camper trailer?
The canvas tent.
Why is the canvas tent the most important component?
If it leaks or has condensation or mildew problems a holiday can be ruined and the camper is not fit for the purpose.
How do I know if the canvas is fit for the purpose?
It should comply to the Australian standard for canvas AS 2001.2.18.1987 which is also the military standard.
How do I know if the canvas meets this standard?
Australian canvas manufactured by Wax Converters (dynaproofed) meets this standard.
Why does Johnno’s use the Hyland hitch?
There are several different types of hitch in common use for off road camper trailers.
We use the Hyland hitch because it is very reliable, strong and very easy to hook up with the 50mm ball compared to the poly block type that uses a skinny pin which can be very difficult to insert when in off road conditions.
Why does Johnno’s use the chunky off road tyres on the off road camper trailers?
These tyres are very tough and we rarely have punctures due to the heavy side wall construction.
Are the Johnno’s Camper Trailers made in Australia?
Yep, sure are. They are made in the only purpose built camper trailer manufacturing facility in Australia.
What is the big deal about the canvas being Australian made?
Australia has more Ultra Violet light content in its sunlight than most other countries.
UV light is potentially very destructive on canvas, affecting the water proofness of the material.
Our canvas is made to the stringent Australian standard which is a lot tougher than the international standards.
Australian canvas is tough and is waterproof yet ‘breaths’.
Can I buy a Sleepout or even the awning walls later when I am in a better financial position?
Yes, our Sleepout and awning walls will fit any camper trailer tent made after 2012 and are always available through your local Johnno’s Outlet.
What about rust proofing?
Johnno’s camper trailers use Duragal plated draw bars and Zincaneal panels.
These treatments are permanent plating techniques this means the camper trailer is protected from rust by the very nature of the materials used.
I understand Johnno’s use electric brakes on their trailers. Do I need to have a brake controller in the vehicle?
You will need an electric brake controller fitted to your vehicle.
Brake controllers should be fitted by a qualified mechanic and are not particularly expensive.
What about re-charging the on-board battery?
There are several ways to re-charge the battery fitted to the camper trailer. The easiest method is to use a conventional mains power battery charger at home.
Alternately, with extra equipment mounted in the camper trailer and the tow vehicle, you can re-charge the camper trailer battery from the tow vehicle whilst you drive.
See your local Johnno’s dealer for more details.
Can I cook with the awning set up? Doesn’t the kitchen end wall get splashed?
Cooking underneath the awning is fine as the awning is quite high.
The kitchen end wall is pegged out, drawing it away from the kitchen.
We haven’t had any issue with the wall getting splashed whilst cooking, but the area behind the kitchen is made from heavy duty pvc, so it can be easily wiped down if need be.
Is it safe to cook with the entire annex set up?
Safety regulations advise that you shouldn’t cook with gas without adequate ventilation.
When the awning is enclosed with the annex wall kit, ensure adequate ventilation when cooking by opening windows or removing a panel of the wall kit.
How easy is a Johnno’s Camper to set-up?
We have spoken to a few different people and they tell us a hard floor camper trailer is a lot easier to set up than a soft floor camper trailer?
Well.. a Johnno’s Camper is extremely user friendly and why our Campers are so well known in the Soft Floor camper trailer sales & hire industry.
For a quick over-night stop it will only take you a couple of minutes to pull out your main tent. For longer stops, you then may want to extend the camper awning for more living space and we can completely set up our campsite in around 15mins.
So, in our opinion, a Johnno’s soft floor is definitely comparable to a hard floor camper in relation to quick set up time IF NOT faster than a lot of models!
I certainly wouldn’t rule out a soft floor camper from your short list because you think it might be difficult to set up!
